Mail’s pace

The Western Mail, under new editor Alan Edmunds, is betting the farm on a March 20 relaunch.

The “national newspaper of Wales’” circulation has slid to hovering around the 60,000 mark on the back of the introduction of the delightfully opiniated Welsh Daily Mirror, prompting an exodus of staff from Thompson House.

The title has looked schizophrenic over recent weeks, no-one really knowing what font to use where, when to use a sensible headline or a tabloid gag, fuelling fears the broadsheet may be driven down-market.

But, with a re-design around the corner, Edmunds plans “appealing to a broader age range and reflecting the vibrancy of modern Wales”.

First move, however, is an £18m new printing press which should end the days of ink-soaked pages or, sometimes, no pages at all.
