iCan and iWill!
BBCi’s fascinating forthcoming grassroots democracy project, iCan, has launched in beta, report Matt Jones and Danny O’Brien.
Developed by the people behind FaxYourMP.com iCan aims to re-involve citizens in their local political sphere by facillitating issue-led campaigns and enabling connections between concerned, like-minded citizens.
It arose out of Auntie’s review of political coverage and recent waves of figures showing many people are no longer interested in voting or do not understand how to lobby the system (for example, my article here).
This is sooooo exciting and a great use of technology, but is sure to produce howls of abuse from the right-wing media when racist campaigns and the like appear on bbc.co.uk - for the iCan team will not be discriminating about the merits of each campaign started.
What’s more, Justin Lewis’ research team at Cardiff University’s journalism department (my old stomping ground) will be keeping a check on iCan after announcing a research project into its impact. Full iCan launch is not until November.
