Weblog journalism goes mainstream

It looks like journalism-by-blog is coming in from the cold. The weblog produced by the Online staff at Guardian Unlimited is now being brought into the rest of the GU site.

When the technology section decided it wanted to blog tidbit stories three years ago, “it was all a bit experimental” - staff were unable to host their commentary on the newspaper’s main site, they were forced to open a Blogger account just like everyone else and to use their own server.

Now Onlineblog will move to within the Guardian Unlimited network, where it will share the same look and feel as its sections on news, society, sport et al and will occupy a more visible, higher-profile spot. According to Neil McIntosh:-

It’ll herald the start of a new experiment with blogging at Guardian Unlimited, as we begin to explore the new form of journalism this technology makes possible. There’s much more to come on this front.

Interesting times. The Guardian has always threatened to be one of the first to take blogging truly mainstream as a medium for journalism. Could this in vitro experiment’s end indicate that, after all the hype, the predictions are coming true?
