The Times is a-changin’
So this is taking transparent journalism to a new level. The New York Times’ editors have penned a remarkable en masse correction for much of the paper’s war coverage.
The Gray Lady is still recovering from the Jayson Blair scandal, which has left the paper having to rebuild its intrgrity. Next step is to turn turn the paper inside-out.
The editors write:-
Over the last year this newspaper has shone the bright light of hindsight on decisions that led the United States into Iraq … It is past time we turned the same light on ourselves.”
What transpires is an admission that some of the Times’ reporting of the war has been as ropey as the grounds for war themselves:-
We have found a number of instances of coverage that was not as rigorous as it should have been … we wish we had been more aggressive in re-examining the claims.
In particular, the Times regrets that it allowed itself to become a mouthpiece for anti-Saddam campaign Ahmed Chalabi. Like the White House, it now admits it was misinformed by Chalabi’s hard-line “regime change” lobby.
Editors at several levels who should have been challenging reporters and pressing for more skepticism were perhaps too intent on rushing scoops into the paper.
Not only do the editors set the record straight in a two-page leader - they dedicate another page to explaining, point-by-point, just why their stories - dozens of them - were written on shaky foundations.
It’s a remarkable shredding of your own integrity that few of us would prefer was made public. And it functions especially well online because the admission can link to the dodgy stories in question, in their original form, in the Times’ archive.
I remember arguing with my old skool journalism tutor that The Guardian’s corrections policy was a great idea - after all, rather than leave readers misinformed by leaving mistakes hanging in the archives, better to let them know.
But the Times’ move is in a different league. It has its roots, of course, in the Blair controversy (the paper is having to rebuild its tarnished reputation; better to get all the mistakes out in the open and start over with a blank sheet of newsprint).
But it’s also exactly the kind of honesty we need from our news media. We expect transparency from our elected representatives, and - with WMD still nowhere to be seen - many are clearly now looking from an admission from the coalition that it overstated the threat from Iraq. Why not expect the same behaviour from our journalists who, as in some of the Times’ cases, have just done that?
I can’t help but wonder whether, if the Daily Mirror had had a Jayson Blair of its own prior to the prisoner abuse photos affair, it might have gone through a similar - if uncomfortable - period of soul searching at a less costly time.
