Blogging a Dead Horse
(Via E-Media Tidbits and, depressingly, in the bloggers-blogging-about-blogging category) Chris Nolan suggests we should rechristen weblogging “standalone journalism”. Chris says:
For a while I and many others have been dissatisfied with the term ‘web logging.’ That focuses on the technology, not on what the technology produces.
But I’m minded to wonder whether “journalism” isn’t a name itself derived from technology, whether it wasn’t the act of writing in a journal which gave the practice and, later, the profession its name.
In this same category (and also via Tidbits) yet more talk about whether blogging constitutes journalism per se. Yawn. The bright suggestion pops up - “Caputa suggests fact-checking blogs” - which is one of the many, but entirely obvious, ways a conventional newsroom might want to embark on their wonderful weblog adventure.
This is getting tired; the answer is already out there. Do weblogs constitute journalism? “Yes. And no”.
