Sorry seems to be the easiest word for NY Times
The New York Times is getting to like the fit of its hairshirt. In May, the Gray Lady’s editors penned a remarkable op-ed admitting that much of its coverage leading to the Iraq war was ill-founded.
Today, in the week that UK and US inquiries concluded the intelligence which led those governments to a war over weapons of mass destruction was shakey, the editors publish a leader saying even their op-eds were equally shakey:
We were wrong about the weapons. And we should have been more aggressive in helping our readers understand that there was always a possibility that no large stockpiles existed.
But we do fault ourselves for failing to deconstruct the W.M.D. issue with the kind of thoroughness we directed at the question of a link between Iraq and Al Qaeda. We regret now that we didn’t do more to challenge the president’s assumptions.
So it’s now doubly refreshing to find a newspaper with the hangdog expression many expect of the politicians.
