Gazing upon heavyweight news
This graph, produced by Technorati to indicate website popularity by the number of links they receive from weblogs, shows how the heavyweight news players are still the dominant force in the online publishing ecosphere.
Bloggers all link to The New York Times, CNN, BBC News and the Washington Post more than they do to each other, though the large community sites Slashdot and Plastic make a good showing whilst BoingBong and Instapundit are the bloggers celebre in the top third, beating some mainstream outlets.
What does this indicate? For me, it shows how content is still king (ack!) - and underlines the differences between these two types of media operation. Webloggers don’t often have the resources to generate their own stories, nor the high-profile stories that appeal to a mass audience, bloggers included.
The top news organisations receive the most attention from the blogosphere because their sites will always carry the world’s biggest, newest, most broadly relevant news; it stands to reason that commentators will want to comment on - and link to - them.
