Just like they did in the Trent Lott scandal, bloggers have fact-checked CBS News into a retraction of its expose of President Bush supposedoly dodgy military service record.

Here is Adam L. Penenberg on how bloggers work to “keep journalists honest” .. “The end result may be better-quality news.”

I’ve just started reading Dan Gillmor’s We The Media. Dan says (p46):-

Outsiders of all kinds can probe more deeply into newsmakers’ business and affairs. They can disseminate what they learn more quickly and more widely. And it’s never been easier to organize like-minded people to support, or denounce, a person or cause. The communications-enabled grassroots in a formidable truth squad.

Other examples of grassroots story checking? Abu Ghraib, Rodney King, etc. etc.
