BBC News launches Newstracker
BBC News has launched a service which adds links to similar stories on rival websites.
Earlier in the year, Philip Graf’s report into the BBC’s online services suggested BBC News should be doing this, amid discontent from commercial online news providers. Google News has been aggregating multiple publishers’ reports on a single story for a long while now. It seems like a good move for a public service organisation, providing added context and perspective in the age of media multiplicity.
“Newstracker“, the BBC says,…
… uses web search technology to identify content from other news websites that relates to a particular BBC story.
BBC News gets a constantly updating feed of stories from around 4000 different news websites. The feed is provided to us by Moreover Technologies.
Because we do this comparison very regularly, our stories contain links to the most relevant and latest articles appearing on other sites.
The technology section is already publishing stories that include Newstracker results.
