Echoing China’s state censorship of internet sites, Google News says it, too, neglects to link to stories on sites the government has blocked.

Google recently launched a Chinese edition amid a controversy over the issue.

“When people do a search they will get the wrong impression that the whole world is saying the same thing,” Bill Xia of US anti-censorship firm Dynamic Internet Technology told the New Scientist last week.

Google explains:-

[Our] links to stories published by blocked news sources would not work for users inside the PRC — if they clicked on a headline from a blocked source, they would get an error page … simply showing these headlines would likely result in Google News being blocked altogether in China.

Meanwhile, Adam L. Penenberg suggests that news providers linked to from Google News will bolt the moment the aggregation site tries to make revenue by slapping ads on its pages, for fear their own ad revenue streams could be cut.
