Indymedia shutdown sparks freedom concerns
The US has shut down 20 of Indymedia’s websites hosted in London in a move which is causing a buzz over freedom of speech and independent online journalism. Apparently, the move came on the request of Italian and Swiss authorities after Indymedia posted to its Nantes, France, site the names and photographs of Geneva police officers in charge of investigating the 2003 G8 riots.
Texas hosting firm Rackspace, which has a Middlesex office, complied with an American request to hand over its servers, removing the sites from the web. The firm, which said it was acting like a good global citizen, said it was complying with the “Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT), which establishes procedures for countries to assist each other in investigations such as international terrorism, kidnapping and money laundering”.
The International Federation of Journalists calls it “an intolerable and intrusive international police operation against a network specialising in independent journalism”. Tim Gopsill of the NUJ said: “If the security services of the UK or US can just walk in and take away a server, then there is no freedom of expression.” Indymedia itself “considers this extremely invasive operation a a serious threat to the Freedom of Speech worldwide”. The EFF, too, is predictably angry.
Indymedia’s site is updating with plenty of links, coverage and opinion, but mainstream media hasn’t reported it very well. One or two of the stories are confusing; some claim the FBI made the shutdown (despite the FBI denying it) before contradicting themselves and not explaining the likely reasons behind it.
