Rather would rather not get in a lather
Does Dan Rather’s imminent departure from CBS News’ anchor desk have anything to do with the September episode in which webloggers exposed failings in the veteran reporter’s story on Bush’s National Guard service - or just the fact that he’s 73?
The move comes hot on the heels of the departure of NBC’s Tom Brokaw, 64. But, according to The New York Times, Rather had intended to stay until 2006.
Whilst there is no suggestion Rather is being pushed aside as a result of hounding by those pesky geeks, the Texan says he is going early because he wanted to give the impression his departure is “separate” from his employer’s investigation into the story and comes before the conclusions are published.
“Both he and Leslie Moonves, CBS’s chairman and co-president of its parent company, Viacom, emphasized that the timing of the announcement was dictated by events largely out of their control,” said the Times.
Update (Nov 24): Tom Watson rips into uber-blogger (did I just say “uber-blogger”?) Jeff Jarvis for what he sees as his part in the downfall of Rather, and tries to inject back into the debate a bit of respect for the anchor.
At his place, Jarvis contends Rather’s departure “marks the death of the anchor, the extinction of the trusted news star, the toppling of journalism on a pedestal” plus “the end of news as a lecture, and the death of one-way media”. Phew, can we get any more new-media-journalism/new-communication-model cliches in there?
Rather is being made an apposite trophy for journobloggers, but he should neither be pushed as the single symbol of all the changes that have been taking place in recent months and years, nor have his long and worthwhile reputation for rigour buried overnight. I’d like to think the relationship between journalists and their blogging shadows is a little more complex than this, worthy of a finer balance by now.
Besides, it may be misrepresenting to suggest Rathergate, as a single episode, marks the move from news-as-lecture, which has been growing thanks to a whole range of technological and cultural shifts. You want that? Fine; look to Wikinews or OhMyNews or any of the other examples of the shift away from that model, including and encompassingRathergate as a trend. But Rathergate alone? No, that was all about the audience policing and fact-checking a news that remains very much still a lecture. There’s no one-size-fits all here - the interactions between bloggers and journalists have reached such an advanced, overground level of maturity that they are many and varied and it’s no longer easy to paint them as a single war against competing factions.
