MSNBC dives into citizen journalism
The man who used We Media to take Democrat presidential nominee Howard Dean to the brink of candidacy is helping MSNBC take the “citizen journalism” phenomenon to a new phase.
The news network’s website ran reports from “CJs” during the eventual election. Now Joe Trippi is trying to weave public stories into the fabric of its journalism, an “experiment in democratised journalism”:-
This week we are going to make Citizen Journalist a regular part of MSNBC’s coverage of events large and small. We will put most of the stories you file up on our Citizen Journalist Blog, and take the best reports and talk about them on the air.
Trippi says “everyone’s an expert on something, send us your insight”.
He even sets his CJs a number of “assignments” to report on, from fighting in Fallujah to Thanksgiving at home. It will be interesting to see whether correspondents come back with merely replies and opinions, as they might with a letters page or talking point or something more…
I’m minded to link to Steve Outings tips on how to integrate citizen journalism into a mainstream news site, not least because I haven’t read them yet.
