Gillmor quits to build grassroots project
Trailblazing San Jose Mercury News technology correspondent Dan Gillmor is quitting the paper to start his own grassroots journalism venture.
Dan has followed the emergence of participatory journalism for some time now, compiling his findings in this year’s open-source book We The Media. Now he’s ready to put the theory into practice.
His venture capital reporter colleagues on the Merc are lamenting Dan’s depature, noting he has attracted seed funding for his project.
“Something powerful is happening, it’s in the early stages and I have a chance to help figure this out,” Gillmor told Matt Marshall and Michael Bazeley.
It chimes with recent murmurings from pundits tired with talk and promise - Mark Glaser wants Big Media to do participatory journalism yesterday, Steve Outing is worried Big Media may get left behind and Simon Waldman, too, wants citizen journalism now.
So, Dan, I’m really looking forward to staying posted on whatever it is you’re working on.
Update: OhMyNews has interviewed Gillmor.
