Camera confessional from Justin Hall
Justin Hall is a person to respect and admire. Justin has been publishing his life online for the last eleven years, talking with immense authority about online and mobile communications at his website, in publications and at conferences. Back in the day, Justin told fantastic tales about working at HotWired and hanging with Howard Rheingold.
Recently, Justin’s site content has been replaced by a single, Google-like search box. Jill Walker now explains why after Justin added a 10-minute video (in which he explains “I sort of had a breakdown in January 2005″) “where he cries into the camera asking how to combine his deep need to make media, write, publish, share with his need to have meaningful relationships and love”.
It’s a horrible experience, watching the breakdown of a young man who’s falling in love has changed his unshakeable world view about the connections and art and intimacies that he makes through online media and writing. Quotes:-
The web makes me not alone and I feed it my intimacies and the web is my constant connection to something larger than myself.
There’s a little red light on the front of the computer - I guess it looks like the future.
I won’t venture to know what this all means (suffice to say, it’s interesting to see somebody so at the bleeding edge of thinking and doing networked/social media ultimately find no connection there as close as the one he craves) because I don’t know Justin (maybe that’s just rubbing in the fact that I know of him but don’t know? - connections never quite made).
But Jill makes some stabs at interpretations of his camera confessional, lifting several quotes like:-
Without the prohibition of intimate disclosure, there would be no transgression. The prohibition therefore is constitutive of the meaning of self-revelation on the Internet
All interesting. Ultimately, I wish Justin well and hope he continues to be someone an awful lot of strangers admire (the admiration of, and intimacy, with people closer than us will come in time…).
