Newspaper publishing weblog as printed magazine
What a marvellously strange take on the blogging/newspaper relationship. First, France’s Le Monde gave its readers weblogs on its own website. Now Germany’s Dusseldorf-based Rheinische Post has a weblog that, every fortnight from next month, will be output as a printed magazine bundled with the newspaper.
Running - like Le Monde’s blogs - since December 2004, Opinio is “a group blog conducted by users of the RP-Online website”, according to E-media Tidbits. Now the bloggers’ articles will form a regular “magazine for readers of readers”, according to a German media site, which says it’s “the first attempt to transfer the culture of the weblogs to a print medium”.
A Google translation of that page (since I don’t happen to speak German) says bloggers produce:-
photographs written, and read from humans, who want to put in a word: of you… articles, photos and thought on-line, which appear then immediately there [on the site] and later with luck also in the printed magazine
Bold indeed. It will be interesting to see how this turns out. Of course, it’s not quite the first time weblogs have filtered up to the mainstream print journalism. In the autumn of 2004, Glenn Reynolds and Markos Moulitsas were given columns in The Guardian to slug out the election from sidelines at the political left and right.
But those guys now have huge enough online audiences that you can say they have earned proper journalistic respect (and salary). It may be that newspapers would do well to court similarly excitable, but earlier-stage, blog writers as a cheap source of “people”-led copy.

I’m curious to see how this turns out. I’ve long thought that Blogs could benefit from the context and bounds of an edition. I’m curious to see how the project fares.
