Bloggers now claim “we’re *not* journalists”
I think this issue is settled now, but I feel the need to say it again.
Salam Pax, the Baghdad Blogger who wrote a weblog from Iraq during the recent invasion and who landed a deal with The Guardian, says in an interview:-
Blogging is not journalism. Blogs form around the news and give it context.
Absolutely right.
Or… absolutely right to a point. Just as it’s incorrect to presume all bloggers are journalists, it’s incorrect to say no bloggers are journalists.
But this is now something of a trend. Whilst 2003 and 2004 saw much aimless hyperbole spilled about whether blogging constitutes journalism, in the first half of 2005 bloggers are turning away from such claims.
Pax has been used (and, presumably, paid) by The Guardian, BBC News and others as a pseudo-journalist cum frontline Iraqi in recent months.
But he’s not the only blogger to insist lately he’s not a reporter. Markos Moulitsas of the leftist Daily Kos insists he’s an activist, not a journo, whilst even Beltway doyenne Wonkette recently told CSPAN she’s not one either.
Looks like 2005 is shaping up to be bloggers’ year of anti-journalism.
