Craig Newmark spills the coffee beans on CJ plan
Using coffee as a conversational lubricant, San Jose Mercury News venture capital duo Matt Marshall and Michael Bazeley have managed to get Craigslist.org founder Craig Newmark to say a bit more on his citizen journalism plans.
Craig told them:-
“As a consumer of news, I’ve learned that there’s too much important stuff which isn’t printed or which is distorted on the way out,'’ he told us. “One example being news out of the White House. We need to fix it.”
“We, meaning the public, need to evolve a trusted institution with lots of fact-checking that we can trust and that we can prove does provide honest news.'’
Simon Waldman says the plan reeks of “the hubris of success”.
There’s an awful lot of hype about “citizen journalism” at the moment. Many lump bloggers in with this emerging movement, which I hope I’ve mentioned I think is wide of the mark. Wikinews has so far failed to move the success of its Wikipedia encyclopedia into a news environment, plenty out there are prophesying the end of the news media as we know it (and they feel fine).
Now Newmark will hope he can replicate the feel of his existing site - humanity, kinship, sharing and community - in a news setting. I think it’ll be a big challenge.
