Sticky news
In the last couple of weeks, I’ve tried to write about why I don’t think Wikinews is doing a very good job of living up to the notions of either journalism or “citizen journalism” (here and, earlier, here).
Disappointingly, the site tends to recycle existing wire reports and doesn’t add any significant original reportage, let alone citizen reporting. Some folk from Wikinews took me to task on it.
Now, Simon Waldman whispers it, but says “Wikinews isn’t really very good” and adds four recommendations for Jimmy Wales‘ site:-
- Focus. Don’t leave yourself so exposed by trying to overreach so early.
- Demand that people only write from direct experience
- Get an editor
- Connect with the blogosphere
Some interesting responses again, including from Dan100 of Wikinews, who responded earlier on this site, and who tells Simon:-
Anyone can write news about anything, so if you, Simon, want to read about people getting stuck on a train, start writing about such events.
This point is totally lost on me. The acts of writing and reading news are entirely opposed. If someone wants to read a story about people getting stuck on a train, why would they write such a story? People read in order to inform themselves; without information, one cannot write. I’ll be interested to know the next step in the Israeli-Palestinian peace process - but, because I don’t know what the next step will be, I’ll certainly not be writing about it.

Please note that I do not consider myself a wikinewsie, but a wikipedian.

Hi, sorry I missed this one, can’t be everywhere at once.
Wikinews is citizen journalism. People writing the news themselves. Therefore I can’t see how you view me asking Simon to write the kind of news he wants as being odd - that’s the entire point of citizen journalism! Doing it yourself!

That’s fair enough if, say, Simon wanted to become a news producer. But, in the sense of being a news consumer it’s nonsensical.
I want to read news stories because I want to inform myself about things I didn’t know. So why - how?? - could I write such a story?
