BBC + RSS = Public service headlines on websites anywhere
BBC News has announced a relaxation of rules that outlawed syndication of its headlines to other websites.
For the last couple of years, concerns about licensing and copyright have seen Auntie approach syndication in a limited fashion, only allowing users to place BBC headlines on their own sites using a proprietary box if they agreed to stringent terms and conditions.
Now the team has decided to let other sites place BBC News content on their sites in a much more open fashion from May, using real RSS feeds. The decision is likely to mean the appearance of BBC News headlines of a multitude of non-BBC websites.
RSS feeds were previously available for site readers to use in news aggregator software. Now BBC News editor Pete Clifton has revealed the success of this new mode of distribution:-
In March, we registered 16.5 million click-throughs to reports from RSS feeds, and our target is 10% of our traffic driven by RSS by the end of this year.
