The people’s pictures - to pay or not to pay?
BBC News Interactive’s editor, Pete Clifton, has insisted he will not pay “citizen photojournalists” for their mobile phone snaps.
New camphone picture agency Scoopt has received quite some attention in the last couple of weeks, as the London bombings episode showed how ordinary commuters armed with mobile phones can make significant contributions to news coverage.
Scoopt attempts to sell those people’s photos on to contacts in the mainstream news media, with the snappers taking a 50% cut. The BBC profiled the site this morning, off the back of Torin Douglas’ piece yesterday about “citizen journalism” in general.
But, whilst some BBC News readers say the amateur photographers should be getting paid for their endeavour, Clifton says that’s not in Auntie’s remit:-
will be BBC News site be splashing out? No. People can send us images if they want to, and our experience recently has been that the vast majority of readers simply wanted to share their images and had no interest in making money. Others were very clear that the images were only to be used by us.
I may be misreading the spirit of all this, but so far it seems that our readers are keen to be involved and to contribute to our newsgathering if they can, and money is not the driver
