Is war reporting dead?
Macho war reporting is dead, writes Maggie Kane in today’s Guardian, noting that the danger of correspondents travelling in Iraq, and of not being force-fed official information in military hotel rooms, is prompting many warzone reporters to opt instead for a safer family life…
And that is the great tragedy for war reporting now. We no longer know what is going on but we are pretending we do. Any decent reporter knows that reporting from Baghdad now does a disservice to the truth.
So I’m minded of one exception who is using new technology to perform old-fashion frontline reporting. A solo journalist, Kevin Sites is currently travelling what he hopes will be all of the world’s warzones with video and still cameras, a laptop, satellite phone and precious little else, aiming to beam back to the web real stories from “hot zones” (ie. places you and I might get killed). If you want bravery on the front line, Kevin looks just the job.
