Flickr for marketing?
I thought this would attract more criticism than it has. Shayne and Chris from Hypergene are experimenting with using Flickr for product marketing. On behalf of iView, they are posting box shots and screen grabs of a new piece of image editing software to the photo sharing community:-
In addition to being an excellent photo-sharing tool, Flickr is also a good viral marketing tool. Sharing “official” product images or screenshots on Flickr with good explanations and related hyperlinks is a marketing tool for several reasons
Given some Flickr fans’ concerns about potential abuses within their rank, I might have thought there would be some opposition to the commercialisation of the photo ecology.
But no. Just a single comment across 63 photos. And that was very welcoming.
Does this suggest that people don’t care about Flickr being used for advertising, or just that hypothesis (the community will welcome warm-and-cosy marketing efforts) doesn’t bear up?
As the boys point out, Steve Rubel had predicted such a phenomenon (the invasion of social bookmarking and community sites by marketing).
It’s clear that places like Digg and del.icio.us may soon be excellent buzz-generation tools. Just don’t tell anyone.
