I’ve long been an admirer of Adrian Holovaty - Lawrence.com founding father, Javascript and Google Maps news hacker dude.
Having moved to the Washington Post for a new position as editorial innovations editor, Adrian has now pulled something new from up his sleeve - the “Mashington Post“.
Otherwise known as Post Remix, the new space on the newspaper’s website is an invitation to other news hackers (Holovites?) “who’ve made cool and interesting projects (”mashups”) using Post content”. Says Adrian:-
We want to foster innovation, and because we want to see your ideas about new ways of displaying news and information on the Web.
Examples so far? A news quiz, a geo-news interface and more.
Post Remix is clearly influenced by BBC’s Backstage, a space where staff BBC developers collaborate with citizen tinkerers on new ways to present Beeb content using syndication feeds, APIs and such like.
What does it mean? Well, if the the form of the newspaper is on the slippery slope Jeff Jarvis, most notably, observes, it pays to put some work into finding out how readers might want to consume your content at all. Best way to do that? Let them build the new forms to distribute your content. Put that way, the industry up to now (”gotta get a website”) looks soooooo one-dimensional.
