Telegraph asks for readers pics, Guardian is podcasting
Two more developments in UK newspaper-web synergy this week…
- Hot on the heels of launching a daily podcast, The Daily Telegraph is now getting in on the citizen photojournalism game. Under the banner “Snap & Send“, the paper, which many traditionally regard as conservative and having an elder readership, is encouraging people to send photographs of breaking news events via email or mobile phone…
If you find yourself with a front-row view of some major event - or even a snowstorm - take a photograph and let our picture editors have a look.
“Citizen journalism”, if you still want to call it that, is now blending into the UK mediascape. When news breaks, many editors immediately factor the search for eyewitness digital pictures into their newsgathering and planning equations. More on that in the notes I made on a recent BBC documentary all about “Citizen Journalists” (which I have not yet posted). They don’t call it that - it’s just part of the evolving editorial mix.
- Meanwhile, Ricky Jervais and the writing team behind The Office have announced that they are to rekindle their former Saturday afternoon Xfm radio show - as a podcast with The Guardian newspaper.
“We are delighted that Ricky, Stephen and Karl have chosen Guardian Unlimited for their podcasts,” said Emily Bell, the editor in chief of Guardian Unlimited.
“Their humour is perfect for our audience, both here and in the US. GU has been experimenting with podcasting over the past year but this represents the start of a much bigger commitment to using different digital formats which give our users the best content in the most convenient way.”
A couple of years back, some people were predicting that newspapers would go multimedia. That’s happened to a large extent, of course - witness the converged newsroom at TBO. But, whilst those affiliated with broadcasters have blossomed with extra media, newspaper websites have remained a largely one-dimensional, textual affair (until The Guardian’s recent repositioning, few were even doing radical textual interactivity).
Now it is becoming apparent newspapers will get their multimedia future - and, with the zeal with which they are approaching it, they may well get there through podcasting.
