How is the ad decline affecting UK newspapers?
There’s no let-up in the doomsaying about the state of the US newspaper industry. In fact, it’s getting louder.
Yesterday’s Slashdot post, A Recipe for Newspaper Survival in the Internet Age, was only the latest prophesy of doom…
- Robin Miller said the San Francisco Chronicle had lost 16.4% of its circulation in the last six months).
- Meanwhile, Sree Sreenivasan’s photograph of unloved newspapers here might sum up the trend visually…
- But Sree can also reel off the facts - 2.6% nationwide drop in the same period against an 11% uptake in online newspaper readership
So it’s natural to look for the reasons after two big happenings in the UK newspaperscape yesterday…
- Trinity Mirror CEO Sly Bailey is cutting 55 jobs (21 editorial) from my local/national titles, The Western Mail and the Echo (plus smaller sister papers), even though the Mail’s circulation has been creeping up since it was tabloidised 14 months ago. The unions aren’t happy with that. Back in October, a Trinity Mirror spokesperson told the Press Gazette:-
“However, we cannot simply ignore the slowdown in the UK’s advertising markets. The review we are undertaking is no more than a prudent and measured response to the difficult trading conditions affecting the entire media industry.
So clearly the shift of advertising spend from old to new media is not confined to North America. It’s the same reason ITV bought up Friends Reunited recently.
- Meanwhile, Daily Mail publisher DMGT yesterday signalled its intention to sell my former stable, Northcliffe, which has more regional newspapers than any other in the UK.
Dan Milmo’s piece in today’s Guardian fails to mention the Trinity Mirror announcement, but it’s notable for DMGT’s denial that the worsening state of the print ad sector is the motivation:-
Peter Williams, finance director of DMGT, said putting the division up for sale was a “pretty dramatic move”. He denied that the growing power of online property and recruitment advertising - seen as a potentially fatal threat to the regionals’ business - was behind the decision. “We do not think there will be a wholesale attrition of regional newspaper publishing, with classified advertising going to the web. We are not seeing any sign of it,” he said.
… and, curiously, Trinity Mirror is said to be favourite amongst the bidders. The idea has been floated, too, of merging titles on Northcliffe’s South West Wales Publications’ imprint. That would leave a quite different landscape to the one I entered a few years back.
